Sheng Le Xu and Zai Li were born in Korea and grew up in Harbin, China — a city in northeast China where Koreans have lived as a recognized minority for generations. In the 1980s they immigrated to Los Angeles looking for freedom of speech and the chance to support a family.

Zai Li worked first for a Korean-owned herbal medicine shop in LA. She learned the structure of the business — the suppliers, the herbs, the rhythm of consultations — and in 1992 she and Sheng opened Harbin Natural Wellness, their own shop, on the corner of Olympia and Norton.

From day one, the family's multilingual gift was the business. Sheng and Zai could speak Korean, Chinese, and English. They could serve both the Koreatown community and the Chinese community of LA from one counter — something almost no other apothecary in the city could do.

셩 르 슈와 자이 리는 한국에서 태어나 중국 할빈에서 자랐습니다. 할빈은 한국인이 오랫동안 소수민족으로 살아온 중국 동북부의 도시입니다. 1980년대, 두 분은 표현의 자유와 가족을 부양할 기회를 찾아 미국으로 이민을 오셨습니다.

Most herbal clinics outsource the messy part. The decoctions, the pills, the powders — sent away to a third-party manufacturer and shipped back in plain bottles.

Harbin doesn't. Every decoction is simmered in the kitchen at the back of the shop. Every pill is rolled and finished by hand. The kitchen is kept clean and open to the public on purpose — customers can walk in and watch raw herbs become finished medicine. That transparency is the whole point.

Most of the raw herbs are imported from China. A smaller share comes from Korea, sourced for the formulas that traditionally use Korean-grown ingredients.

대부분의 한약방은 가장 번거로운 부분을 외부에 맡깁니다. 첩약, 환약, 가루약은 외부 제조업체로 보내져 일반 병에 담겨 돌아옵니다.

원재료의 대부분은 중국에서 들여옵니다. 한국 토종 재료를 쓰는 처방을 위해서는 일부 한국산 약재를 함께 사용합니다.

In 2022, after running the shop for thirty-five years, Zai Li died unexpectedly in the hospital.

Andrew Xu — Sheng and Zai's only child, born in China and brought to Los Angeles as a young boy — walked into the shop the next week with his wife, Kelly Kim (김소영). The desk was strewn with payrolls and paperwork. Sheng couldn't run the business alone. There was no one else.

Andrew was not a herbalist by training. He has said openly that he is still an amateur next to his parents. But there was nothing else to do — so he and Kelly began learning.
